Description:
The Ocean Park Hong Kong will organise “The First Ocean Park International STEAM Education Conference 2019” from 21 June to 22 June 2019, and students from all across the world are invited to participate in “The First Ocean Park International Conservation STEAM Competition”. The competition aims at encouraging students to apply their knowledge and skills in STEAM-related disciplines to solve real-life problems creatively, with its focus on proposing innovative solutions for global environmental issues. The theme of the competition is “STEAM and Marine Conservation”.

Each school may nominate at most 2 teams to join the competition. Each team should be composed of a maximum of 5 students at senior secondary level (S4-S6), and supervised by at least one teacher-in-charge.

Objective:
The Scheme aims to create a learning journey for participants with unique learning experience, where participants will start with an inquiry, get inspired in the process, and most importantly, bring an impact on their teaching/ student learning/ school development upon returning to school. “i” refers to the 3 crucial elements of this Scheme – inquire, inspire and impact, and together they make a fruitful learning journey for participants.

The first two customised programmes under the three-year pilot Scheme, namely Interdisciplinary Learning & Entrepreneurship Education and Assessment Literacy, have been rolled out via EDBCM No. 179/2018. A new programme on STEM Education has been developed to provide more opportunities for serving secondary school teachers to broaden their perspectives and enrich their experience.

Participating teachers will be granted full-pay study leave for the whole period i.e. pre-trip, overseas experience and post-trip. Course fees and transportation between Hong Kong and the location for overseas experience will also be fully sponsored by the EDB. Funding for employment of supply teachers covering participants’ whole study leave period will be provided for their schools. Participating teachers have to undertake to teach full-time in public-sector secondary schools in Hong Kong for two years upon completion of the Programme.

Objective:
The programme aims at facilitating students:
1. to understand the development of Smart City is to address urban challenges, to enhance the effectiveness of city management, and to improve people’s quality of living as well as Hong Kong’s sustainability, efficiency and safety;
2. to further develop the knowledge and skills acquired from “STEM Education”, “IT in Education”, as well as the study of “Climate Change”, “Biodiversity” and “Healthy Lifestyle” through this programme;
3. to integrate and apply the afore-mentioned knowledge and skills to suggest innovative ways to realise the ideas of Smart City in the development of their home, school, community and city environment, and
4. to develop positive values and attitudes, including humanistic spirit and values related to science, technology, and innovation.
