Description:
In response to EDB’s advocacy of promoting and facilitating STEM education in secondary schools, we are inviting some secondary schools to nominate their elite students to join our 2-week taster programme, which is in parallel with the CityU EE International Summer Camp. We tailor the learning materials and activities for S4 and S5 students, aiming at cultivating their interest in engineering innovation as well as boosting their confidence in communicating in an international environment through team work.

Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau Young STEAM Maker Competition 2018
 
Description:
The “Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau Young STEAM Maker Competition” is co-initiated by Lingnan University and the National Institute of Education Sciences, co-organised together with Hong Kong STEM Education Alliance and the New Territories School Heads Association, and supported by the Education Bureau. The competition aims to promote STEM education in the Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau, as well as to enhance the exchange and cooperation in STEM education among the three places. Details of the competition are available at https://steam.LN.edu.hk.

Schools interested in nominating students for the competition may apply at the above-mentioned website from 3 April 2018 (Tuesday) to 18 May 2018 (Friday).

To facilitate students to participate in the competition, two identical training courses are scheduled on 7 and 28 April 2018 (Saturdays). Schools interested in nominating students to attend the training courses are kindly requested to return the completed enrolment form at Appendix 5a (Chinese version only) to the Lingnan Institute of Further Education on or before 29 March 2018 (Thursday). Applications will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis. All successful applicants will receive an email confirmation on or before 3 April 2018 (Tuesday).

Description:
CoolThink@JC Competition 2018 is initiated and funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. It aims to promote computational thinking (CT) among students and provide opportunities for students to apply their skills of CT and coding. The competition encourages students to move beyond mere technology consumption, nurture their problem-solving skills and creativity, as well as develop their innovativeness. Details of the competition are available at www.coolthink.hk.

Schools interested in nominating Primary 4 to 6 students for the competition may apply at the above-mentioned website from 14 March (Wednesday) to 4 May 2018 (Friday).

A briefing session is scheduled on 14 March 2018 (Wednesday) to facilitate teachers’ understanding of the competition details. Schools interested in nominating representatives to attend the briefing session may apply at the above-mentioned website on or before 13 March 2018 (Tuesday).

Description:
“EIE Robotic Challenge Junior 2018: Flying Robot” will be held by the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University on 12 July 2018. There will be a secondary school session and a primary school session in the competition. Secondary and primary school students are welcome to join the Challenge.

The registration deadline of the Challenge is 29 March 2018.

Prof. Tim Bell will deliver the topic Computational Thinking- What is it, and how can I teach it through engaging “Unplugged” demonstrations. Description:
The captioned lectures aims at promoting STEM education. They are also related to History and Archaeology. These lectures enable the public, in particular teachers and students, to learn more about the connections between the development of agriculture, mathematics, science and medicine in China and other countries from ancient to modern times.

The first lecture on “Food Globalization in Prehistory” and the second lecture on “A Wonder of Archaeology in Cereal Fermentation: Thirst for Beer and the Origins of Agriculture” are co-organised by the Joseph Needham Foundation for Science and Civilisation (formerly The East Asian History of Science Foundation) and the Education Bureau. For the second lecture, it is also supported by the Hong Kong Science Museum and the Croucher Foundation.

For the second lecture, schools can also arrange students to visit the permanent exhibition to be held at the Hong Kong Science Museum on the same day. Admission fee for visiting the Museum will be waived.
